Terrorists entered Ugbineh community in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State on 27 April and forced men, women and children to flee into the surrounding bushes.
The group, reportedly led by Dominic Edobor, took control of the area in a dispute over the position of youth leader.
Residents say they informed police before the incident but officers did not step in.
By 2 May the community stood empty except for the terrorists and their associates.
Nine people suffered gunshot wounds and received little medical care because they could not return home safely.
Families spent days in the open with limited supplies.
One resident who asked not to be named said the authorities ignored their warnings.
“We told the police what would happen, yet nothing changed,” the resident explained.
Phone calls to the Edo State Police Command went unanswered.
This situation adds to worries about safety in parts of Edo State where local disagreements sometimes lead to violence.
Residents now ask how they can protect themselves when those in charge offer no support.
Many in the area hope for swift action so people can go back to their homes and normal life can resume.
