Delta State Police arraigned three Emevor community leaders in court today after they flogged a resident for comments in a WhatsApp group.
Lucky Okeremu, chairman of Emevor Community, along with Okiemute Oyibo and Karo Akamakusi, appeared before the Chief Magistrate Court in Ozoro.
Officers arrested the men after videos of the assault spread online. The incident took place at Emiluck Hotel in Emevor.
Ogaga Godspower Okedi made comments about compensation for farmlands damaged by suspected herdsmen.
Community members invited him to a meeting, and the leaders then assaulted him there.
After the videos circulated, police acted on public reports.
They concluded investigations and filed four charges, including conspiracy to commit assault and assault occasioning harm.
Meanwhile, leaders from the Isoko National Youth Assembly and Emevor Community condemned the actions.
They stated that no comment justifies physical punishment.
The case continues in court as authorities seek other suspects still at large.
Community residents now call for calm while they await the court’s decision.
