The Nigerian Red Cross Society Anambra State Branch has commemorated the 2026 World Red Cross Day with a renewed call for humanitarian service, community support, and emergency preparedness across the state.
The event, held on May 8, 2026, brought together Red Cross officials, volunteers, and members of the public to celebrate the global humanitarian movement founded by Sir Jean Henri Dunant.
Speaking during the celebration, the State Chairman, Prof. Charity Ifeyinwa Emelie, narrated the story of Sir Jean Henri Dunant in the Igbo language, urging residents to support humanity in any capacity possible just as Dunant did during the Battle of Solferino, which inspired the formation of the Red Cross movement.
She said the celebration reflects the commitment of the Nigerian Red Cross Society toward building a more compassionate and humane society in partnership with the global humanitarian community.
Prof. Emelie noted that humanitarian response efforts are becoming increasingly challenging due to rising social and emergency needs. She highlighted several intervention programs currently being carried out by the Anambra State Branch, including the popular Operation Keep Community Clean (OKCC) initiative.
The OKCC program was introduced to encourage environmental sanitation and healthier communities across Anambra State, an initiative which demonstrates the core values of Anambra State Government and have contributed to the broader environmental sanitation movement now operational through the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA Brigade).
Other activities highlighted during the event included radio sensitization campaigns, first aid training programs for community members, and the “First Aid on Radio” initiative aimed at improving public awareness and emergency response capacity.
The Red Cross chairman further appealed to the public, corporate organizations, and stakeholders to continue supporting Red Cross humanitarian activities in order to strengthen emergency response and assistance for vulnerable populations.
