A doctor in Benue State tested positive for Lassa fever and later passed away at Jos University Teaching Hospital.

Health officials in Benue have activated contact tracing and increased surveillance after the incident.

The doctor first noticed symptoms and managed them on his own for more than two weeks before seeking further tests.

He received treatment but developed kidney issues and passed away on June 20.

Officials followed safe burial procedures the same day.

The case resets the state’s 42-day countdown for the outbreak.

Authorities now work with community leaders and media outlets to share information about Lassa fever and encourage early testing.

Residents should report any similar symptoms quickly and avoid contact with rodents, which spread the virus.

This development shows the need for prompt medical attention in areas where Lassa fever appears seasonally.
