A lieutenant in the Nigerian Army lost his life during an encounter with terrorists in Sokoto State on Friday.
Lieutenant Isma’il Abdullahi Chafe served with the 248 Recce Battalion at Illela Barracks.
He was weeks away from his wedding when the incident took place.
Reports indicate the officer came under fire from Lakurawa terrorists in the area.
No official statement has come from the military authorities so far.
Sources close to the situation say the event happened on 16 May.
This development follows a wave of insecurity in parts of Sokoto.
Earlier this week, residents in Isa Local Government Area left their villages after a series of raids.
Many moved to Isa town for safety as terrorists targeted communities including Tidibale and Bargaja.
Lakurawa operates along the Nigeria-Niger border and has carried out several operations in the northwest in recent times.
The group blends criminal activity with extremist goals and remains active in the forests of the region.
Communities in the area continue to face pressure from these groups, which has led to displacement and disruption of daily life.
Security forces maintain operations in the zone, though updates on the latest incident remain limited.
Families and colleagues of Lieutenant Chafe now deal with the loss as details slowly emerge.
