Over 200 Alleged Killings Force Calls to Dismantle Imo Police ‘Tiger Base’

Grieving families in Imo State demand justice as activists unveil evidence of systematic killings and torture at Tiger Base.

Heart-wrenching testimonies from survivors and families shattered the silence on December 15, 2025, when activists launched a explosive campaign against a notorious police unit accused of turning into a house of horrors.

The Coalition Against Tiger Base Impunity (CAPTI), backed by groups including Amnesty International and Avocats Sans Frontières, unveiled “The Tiger Base Files” — a chilling report documenting over 200 extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and brutal torture at the Imo State Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit, known as Tiger Base, from 2021 to 2025.

Survivors recount nights of agony: detainees hung by limbs, electrocuted, and beaten until they confessed to crimes they never committed.

Yet, many never emerged alive.

One devastating case stands out — Japhet Njoku, a 32-year-old security guard, arrested in May 2025 over unproven theft allegations.

Officers allegedly tortured him relentlessly; his body was dumped secretly at a hospital while his family was lied to, told he still lived.

Another tragedy struck businessman Levi Opara, a father of five, who died in custody from shock, starvation, and multiple injuries, according to autopsy findings.

Families paid millions in extortion — from ₦200,000 to ₦20 million only to receive corpses or silence.

Moreover, victims like Pastor Chinedu, Reverend Cletus Nwachukwu, and Onuocha Johnbosco vanished without trace after arrest, leaving loved ones in endless despair.

Alarmingly, the unit’s commander, ACP Oladimeji Adeyeyiwa, received promotions and awards despite petitions flooding the Inspector-General of Police and National Human Rights Commission.

As outrage boils over, activists launched #TigerBaseMustFall, demanding immediate disbandment and independent probes.

The African Action Congress urged Nigerians to stand in solidarity, warning that impunity threatens everyone’s dignity.

However, Imo Police dismiss the claims as baseless smears by criminals, crediting Tiger Base for dismantling kidnapping syndicates and restoring peace.

Still, with no prosecutions and patterns echoing the #EndSARS era, families cling to hope: will justice finally roar against the tiger?
