Suspected Boko Haram terrorists struck Mussa community in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State on Wednesday afternoon and took the lives of four soldiers together with one civilian woman.
The incident happened around midday when the terrorists launched a coordinated assault on the area.
Troops from the 115 Task Force Battalion responded quickly and exchanged fire with the attackers for about 30 minutes.
The soldiers stood their ground and pushed the terrorists back before they could enter the town.
Residents heard sustained gunfire during the clash, but the military eventually regained control of the situation.
Sources close to the operation said the terrorists failed to overrun the community despite the surprise element of their move.
This latest event adds to the ongoing security challenges in northeastern Nigeria, where Boko Haram continues to target both military positions and civilian settlements in Borno State.
Communities in Askira/Uba have faced repeated incidents in recent months, and many locals now live with a constant sense of unease.
Security forces have stepped up operations in the region, yet attacks like this one show that the threat remains active.
Officials have not released the names of the fallen soldiers or the woman at the time of reporting, and investigations into the exact circumstances are still underway.
Families of the victims and residents of Mussa now face the difficult task of dealing with the loss while hoping for stronger measures to prevent further incidents in the area.
