Terrorists seized 23 pupils and the wife of the proprietor from an unregistered orphanage and school in Zariagi, along the Kabba Junction axis of Lokoja, late on Sunday evening.
The incident took place at the facility, which operates in an isolated area.
Security agencies received reports quickly and moved in without delay.
Their coordinated efforts led to the rescue of 15 pupils within hours.
Operations continue to secure the release of the remaining victims, including the proprietor’s wife.
Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, confirmed the details in a statement on Monday.
He noted that the swift response by the Nigeria Police Force and other security operatives made the initial rescues possible.
The state government described the event as unfortunate and avoidable.
Officials pointed out that the facility had no official registration and stood in a remote location at a time when security challenges persist across parts of the region.
They urged operators of schools and orphanages to follow proper registration procedures and avoid isolated sites to reduce risks.
So far, authorities have not released further information on the identity or number of the terrorists involved.
Efforts to track and apprehend them remain active.
This development comes amid ongoing concerns about security in Kogi State and neighbouring areas.
Residents and stakeholders now call for stronger measures to protect educational facilities and vulnerable children.
