UniJos Lecturers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Salary

Lecturers at the University of Jos (UniJos) have withdrawn their services in an indefinite strike that started on Wednesday, 8 April 2026.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities branch took the step after the federal government failed to pay salaries for March and left out the Earned Academic Allowance from staff pay.

Professor Jurbe Molwus, the branch chairperson, signed the statement that directed members to stop lectures, examinations and statutory meetings straight away.

He explained that the university had completed all its internal processes on time.

Yet the delay came from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation.

“After following due process, we request all members to abstain from lectures, the conduct of exams, and statutory meetings,” the statement read.

“Our salary for the month of March 2026 is yet to be paid despite our patience.”

This action follows a pattern of salary disputes in Nigerian public universities.

Earlier this year the federal government and ASUU reached an agreement that included a salary review and better handling of allowances.

However, implementation has not gone smoothly at every institution.

Lecturers at UniJos say they have shown enough patience while their families wait for money to cover basic needs.

Students now face another interruption to their academic calendar.

Many had hoped for a stable session after previous disruptions.

The strike halts teaching and assessments across the campus, and no one knows yet when classes will resume.

Molwus made it clear that the union will not return to work until the salaries reach the lecturers in full and the allowance appears in their pay.

He urged the federal authorities to act quickly so that normal activities can continue at the university.

The development adds to ongoing concerns about funding and timely payments in higher education.

Families who rely on lecturers’ income feel the pressure, while students worry about extended time in school and delayed graduations.

For now, the campus remains quiet as both sides wait for a resolution.
