Terrorists killed 11 people and set fire to about 50 houses during clashes between two communities in Nasarawa State.
The violence hit Akyawa and Udege Kasa in the Udege Development Area of Nasarawa Local Government in the early hours of Friday.
Police say the attack formed a reprisal after the alleged killing of two men from one side.
The Nasarawa State Police Command confirmed the deaths on Saturday.
Commissioner of Police Shetima Jauro Mohammed visited the communities the same day and spoke directly with residents.
He told them security teams had begun an intensive hunt for those responsible and would bring them to justice.
During the visit Mohammed also ordered extra police officers, soldiers and members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to move into the area straight away.
The aim is to stop any further trouble and keep the peace.
A stakeholders’ meeting took place while he was there.
Mohammed asked everyone to stay calm and to pass on any useful information to the authorities.
The command later stated that normal activities have returned to the communities and that steps are in place to prevent the violence from happening again.
Locals say the latest incident follows a similar attack on nearby Sabon Gida only two days earlier.
Some residents told journalists they had seen the attackers moving around the area beforehand but received no protection at the time.
They now fear more raids and have asked the state government to step in quickly so farmers can plant their crops without worry.
