Peter Obi handed over ₦10 million to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Mgbowo, Enugu State, and pledged ongoing monthly support to restore the facility that serves as the only healthcare option for the local area and surrounding villages.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-Anambra governor visited the hospital on Thursday, February 5, 2026, shortly after attending a symposium in honor of Prof. Pat Utomi’s 70th birthday.
During the tour, Obi inspected the overgrown premises, crumbling structures, and outdated equipment that highlight years of neglect.
He presented the cheque directly to hospital management and emphasized the urgent need for rehabilitation.
“While this task cannot be handled by one person alone, I will continue to contribute monthly towards its rehabilitation,” Obi stated in his official announcement.
The Catholic Diocese of Awgu now manages the facility, which it inherited from the former Enugu Diocese.
At its peak, the hospital provided essential services to a wide region.
Today, it remains the sole lifeline for residents who otherwise face long, difficult journeys for basic medical care.
Obi praised missionary organizations—Christian and Muslim alike—for stepping in where public systems fall short.
He argued that their work fills critical gaps and supports the government’s responsibility to deliver essential services.
“By offering support, we are not only restoring a facility but also reaffirming our shared responsibility to protect life and dignity in our communities,” he added.
This donation fits Obi’s consistent pattern of personal interventions in healthcare and education.
In recent years, he has made similar contributions, including ₦15 million to Annunciation Specialist Hospital in Enugu and ₦10 million toward the acquisition and revival of Good Hope Specialist Hospital in Anambra.
Locals and observers welcomed the gesture as a practical step toward addressing Nigeria’s healthcare challenges in underserved areas.
Obi concluded his statement with a familiar message: “A new Nigeria is Possible.”
