Patients battling leprosy at the Niger State Leprosy Hospital now sleep and rest far more comfortably after The Leprosy Mission Nigeria handed over 25 electronic motorised beds on Thursday.
The organisation also donated 25 sets of bed sheets, pillows, and pillow cases to go with the new beds.
Staff and patients welcomed the gifts warmly, describing them as a real step forward in daily care at the specialist facility.
Pius Ogbu, operations manager for The Leprosy Mission Nigeria, presented the items to representatives of the Niger State Government.
He explained that the Swiss arm of The Leprosy Mission provided the beds.
“With these electronic motorised beds, patients can now adjust positions easily to suit their comfort,” Ogbu said.
Many people living with leprosy suffer nerve damage that limits movement, so simple actions like sitting up or turning over often prove difficult and painful without help.
The donation forms part of ongoing work by the charity to improve treatment conditions and reduce stigma around the disease.
Leprosy remains a public health challenge in parts of Nigeria, yet early diagnosis and proper care allow most people to recover fully and lead normal lives.
Niger State Commissioner for Health received the beds on behalf of the government.
He promised to provide more resources for the hospital, including specialist staff postings and general upgrades.
“We are happy to receive these 25 beds,” the commissioner noted, adding that the adjustable features will greatly improve patient comfort and support healing.
The Niger State Leprosy Hospital continues to serve as a key centre for treating leprosy complications in the region.
The new equipment arrives at a time when health authorities and partners push harder to tackle neglected tropical diseases and ensure dignified care for affected people.
This handover highlights the power of partnership between non-profit groups, international supporters, and state government to make meaningful differences in patients’ everyday lives.
For many at the hospital, a better night’s sleep now feels within reach.
