NEMA officials have distributed rice, cement and other relief items to people affected by fires in Cross River State.
The agency carried out the exercise at the State Emergency Management Agency warehouse in Calabar.
Staff from NEMA’s Uyo operations office led the effort and worked alongside the Cross River SEMA, the Nigerian Red Cross, local government leaders, security personnel and members of the media.
Items handed out included rice, garri, beans, vegetable oil, seasoning cubes, tomato paste, iodised salt, zinc nails, dignity packs and bags of cement.
These supplies went to victims from Goldie market in Calabar South, Abama in Bakassi and Nyaghasang in Calabar Municipality.
Mmandu Aisueni, head of operations, spoke on behalf of NEMA Director General Zubaida Umar.
She expressed sympathy to those affected and urged them to make good use of the materials.
Aisueni also advised beneficiaries to adopt measures that reduce the risk of future incidents.
Two residents who received aid thanked the federal government and NEMA for the support.
Ita Okon Nyong and Happiness James said the items would help the victims recover from the losses.
In a related development, Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu visited the scene of a gas explosion at Edibe Edibe in Calabar South in early March.
He assessed the damage and promised government action to assist those impacted.
