NEMA rushes aid to over 600 households in Obubra and Ikom, Cross River State, after a devastating windstorm and recent communal clashes left hundreds homeless.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) launched a targeted relief operation on Monday, February 23, 2026, in Cross River Central Senatorial District.

Teams distributed essential items simultaneously at Ochon Town Hall in Obubra Local Government Area and Ikom Town Hall in Ikom Local Government Area.

Security concerns in the region prompted the dual-site approach.

NEMA’s Uyo Operations Office coordinated the effort with the Nigerian Red Cross Society, local government officials, security agencies, and media representatives.

The agency provided 300 bags of rice, 300 bags of garri, vegetable oil, seasoning cubes, tomato paste, iodized salt, wax prints, and brocade fabrics to support more than 600 affected households.

The windstorm on February 20 destroyed over 463 homes across the communities.

Mrs. Mmandu Aisueni, Head of NEMA’s Uyo Office, represented Director-General Mrs. Zubaida Umar at the flag-off.

She conveyed deep sympathy to the victims and urged residents to use the items wisely.

Aisueni stressed the importance of disaster risk reduction, peaceful coexistence, dialogue, and early resolution of grievances to avert future crises.

Senator Eteng Williams sent Barrister Emmanuel Elemi to represent him.

Elemi praised the Federal Government and NEMA for the rapid intervention.

He highlighted how the supplies would bring immediate relief to struggling families.

Beneficiaries voiced gratitude for the prompt support.

Mrs. Ada Oyiem and Mr. Okey Bartholomew thanked NEMA and called for continued assistance to rebuild damaged properties.

The relief effort arrives amid heightened tensions in the area.

Communal clashes, often rooted in chieftaincy and boundary disputes, recently claimed lives and displaced residents in parts of Obubra and Ikom.

Earlier incidents in February intensified insecurity and prompted warnings from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

NEMA officials emphasized community resilience and collaboration with stakeholders to address both natural disasters and conflict-related challenges in the region.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to supporting vulnerable Nigerians during emergencies.
