The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Sokoto State Government swiftly distributed essential relief materials and cash to thousands of victims ravaged by devastating flood and windstorms across multiple local government areas.
Officials handed over food items, non-food essentials, and building materials to affected communities during a ceremony at the Sokoto Government House on December 15, 2025.
Meanwhile, the state government disbursed ₦150 million in cash support, allocating ₦10 million to each of 15 impacted local government areas.
NEMA targeted six severely hit areas with direct aid following joint assessments that revealed damage far worse than the previous year, including destroyed homes and submerged farmlands.
Shehu Kafindangi, NEMA’s Head of Operations for Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara, emphasized the agency’s commitment to rapid response.
“We partner closely with state governments to deliver immediate stabilization,” he declared, while urging residents to heed early warnings and relocate from high-risk zones.
Furthermore, floods struck Sokoto hard in 2025, affecting over 219,000 individuals across 22 local government areas and displacing thousands, according to joint reports from NEMA and international trackers.
Nationwide, the 2025 flooding season claimed at least 241 lives, displaced over 144,000 people, and impacted more than 433,000 across dozens of states, NEMA data shows.
Climate experts link the intensified rains to broader patterns of extreme weather.
Consequently, local leaders praise the timely intervention as a critical step toward recovery.
Victims now rebuild their lives with the provided roofing sheets, cement, and food supplies, even as calls grow for long-term solutions like improved drainage and resettlement programs.
