Governor Alex Otti announces free urban mass transit on new electric buses to ease holiday travel burdens.
Governor Alex Otti’s administration launches Nigeria’s first state-owned electric bus fleet this December, offering residents free rides throughout the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The initiative deploys 20 custom-built, 40-seater electric buses on major routes in Aba and Umuahia.
Each vehicle boasts a 400-kilometer range on a single overnight charge, modern safety features, USB charging ports, and accessibility ramps for persons with disabilities.
Commissioner for Information Prince Okey Kanu explains that the buses arrived in November, with operations starting before Christmas.
Moreover, the state plans to expand the fleet to 100 units in the first phase, adding another 20 early in 2026.
Transportation Commissioner Chimezie Ukaegbu emphasizes that free service during the yuletide directly relieves commuters amid soaring fuel costs and economic pressures.
Consequently, families reunite more easily for festivities without extra transport expenses.
The government assures tricycle and private operators that the buses complement, rather than compete with, existing services.
Meanwhile, central charging stations and modern terminals support the eco-friendly shift to zero-emission public transport.
Residents and social media users applaud the move, praising Otti for prioritizing welfare and sustainability.
Similar gestures, like free inter-state travel for indigent citizens in previous years, highlight the administration’s ongoing festive support.
