A drone struck US-Italy’s military presence at Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait today, destroying an Italian remotely piloted aircraft.
No personnel suffered injuries.
Italy’s Chief of the Defence General Staff, General Luciano Portolano, confirmed the incident in a statement released this morning.
The drone hit a shelter on the base, which hosts both American and Italian forces, and completely destroyed the aircraft belonging to the Italian Task Force Air.
The general immediately contacted the Italian commander at the base to check on the troops.
He confirmed that everyone stayed safe inside protected areas during the attack.
The defence ministry had already reduced the number of Italian personnel at the base in recent days because of the worsening security situation across the region.
Those who remain carry out only essential tasks for the mission.
The destroyed aircraft played a key role in ongoing operations, and Italy kept it there to maintain continuity.
Authorities now monitor the situation closely through the Defence General Staff and the Joint Operations Headquarters.
This strike comes amid a series of drone attacks on coalition bases in the Gulf.
Earlier incidents in March targeted the same Ali Al Salem facility and other sites, some of which caused casualties among US personnel.
No group has claimed responsibility for today’s attack.
Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said the country will not back down.
Missions continue despite the incident.
The event underlines the persistent risks faced by international forces stationed in the area as tensions in the Middle East remain high.
