Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu launches free bus and boat services for Christmas, bringing relief to thousands facing soaring transport fares.
Governor Bassey Otu flagged off the “Xmas Free Transport Service” on December 1, deploying dozens of buses and boats to carry residents and visitors across urban, rural, and riverine areas at no cost throughout the festive season.
Deputy Governor Peter Odey, representing Otu at the launch in Calabar, declared the initiative a direct response to Nigeria’s biting economic challenges.
“This gesture cushions the effects of hardship and ensures everyone joins the celebrations without worry,” Odey told cheering crowds.
The scheme covers major routes, including Calabar to Ugep, Ikom, Abi, Obudu, and Ogoja, plus ferry services to places like Creek Town in Odukpani.
Over 60 minibuses hit the streets in Calabar alone, running daily from 6 a.m., while free water transport serves remote communities.
Otu ties the program to his “People First” agenda and this year’s Carnival Calabar theme, “Traces of Time.”
The month-long carnival, Africa’s biggest street party, draws thousands, spiking travel demand and costs.
Residents hail the move as a lifeline.
Commercial driver Lela Ezege, one of many enlisted, beams with pride: “Governor Otu listens to the people—this helps us all.”
The free rides, running for 31 days into January, build on similar efforts during past Easter and Christmas periods.
Special Adviser Ekpenyong Akiba calls it proof Otu keeps promises, prioritizing welfare over rhetoric.
As buses fill with grateful passengers heading home for the holidays, the initiative not only eases wallets but strengthens community bonds in a season meant for joy.
