A decayed tree collapsed onto two commercial vehicles Tuesday night, killing 11 passengers instantly and injuring others in Awhum Community, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The incident struck at about 8:45 p.m. on February 17, 2026, at the busy Awhum Village/Market Square.

Heavy rainfall and strong winds, combined with the tree’s apparent internal decay, caused the large trunk to fall directly onto a Toyota Hiace bus and a Sienna minivan.

Both vehicles had stopped to drop off passengers when the disaster unfolded.

Enugu State Police Command swiftly confirmed the toll.

Spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukwe stated that responders extricated victims from the wreckage, rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, and deposited the bodies of the deceased in the mortuary for autopsy and family handover.

Preliminary investigations point to weather-weakened roots and long-standing neglect as key factors.

Local accounts describe the tree—known in the community as “Ukwu Akpu Awhum”—as an ancient landmark with cultural significance.

Some residents initially reported higher casualty figures, with rumors of up to 18 deaths in a single fully loaded 18-seater bus, but official sources consistently verified 11 fatalities.

Videos circulating on social media captured the twisted metal, scattered debris, and chaotic rescue efforts, amplifying public shock and grief.

The tragedy highlights ongoing risks from unmaintained trees near public spaces and transport routes, especially during Nigeria’s rainy season.

Police Commissioner issued an urgent advisory: authorities and residents must regularly inspect and prune aging trees around markets, roadsides, and bus stops to avert similar catastrophes.

Community members expressed deep sorrow over the sudden loss of lives—many ordinary commuters heading home after market day.

As investigations continue, calls grow louder for proactive tree management and better emergency preparedness in vulnerable rural areas.

Enugu authorities commiserated with bereaved families and pledged support during this painful time.
